On Thursday, December 3rd, the UCR School of Public Policy will be hosting a virtual seminar on the history of fair housing laws, by Rose Mayes, executive director of the Fair Housing Council of Riverside County and vice president of the Civil Rights Institute of Inland Southern California.
Mayes has worked in fair housing, civil rights, and business management over the past 30 years. According to her profile, “her work extends from grassroots community-based organizations, to public administrators, to local State and Federal elected officials.”
Mayes leads the Fair Housing Council of Riverside County, a non-profit organization whose mission is to protect the housing rights of everyone regardless of race, religion, sex, age, or any other factor. The organization has tackled discriminatory and unlawful housing practices, while also providing various housing services for Riverside County residents.
“As someone who is interested in urban planning, this event is a great opportunity to learn about the past and anticipate what to expect in the future of housing,” said Uthman Alaoui, second-year public policy student.
This event is open to the general public. Attendees must register to attend. Registrants will receive an email in advance of the event with a link to join.
Since 2014, the UCR School of Public Policy Seminar Series has been bringing policy makers, practitioners, and researchers to campus to talk about various policy issues facing the region and beyond. During the shelter-in-place order for California, all events are being held online. For more information about the series, visit spp.ucr.edu/events.
