Professor of Public Policy Sergio Rey has been awarded a new multi-institution NSF grant, along with Professor Amr Magdy from UCR Computer Science and Engineering, to explore new educational developments for geography curriculum incorporating geospatial technology.
The project is a collaboration with the American Association of Geographers, San Diego State University, San Diego Mesa College, and Sweetwater Union High School District and has a total budget of $1 million across institutions. Titled "Encoding Geography - Scaling up an RPP to achieve inclusive geocomputational education," the institutions will seek research and development activities that will support curriculum toward geo-computationally intensive majors and careers.
Rey is also the Founding Director of the UCR Center for Geospatial Sciences. According to his profile, his research interests are “on the development, implementation, and application of advanced methods of spatial and space-time data analysis [with foci on] regional inequality, convergence and growth dynamics as well as neighborhood change, segregation dynamics, spatial criminology and industrial networks.”
